Parting...
Two friends sat in comfortable silence. They
alternated between looking into each other's eyes and the cups of coffee
that warmed their hands. Although he had told her he was confident that
they would see each other again, she was often the more pessimistic of
the two and that said something. She would miss him greatly and he would
miss her. Their separation would be even worse than if they were
separated from the loves of their life. There was a bond between them
that had never been between any of their lovers. They had each learned
the lessons of life. They had been taught by different methods, but the
lesson had been the same: Never let anyone see the chink in your armor,
never let anyone know you can be hurt.
This was what bound them. This was the link
between them. She knew that if she could ever allow herself the luxury
of letting down her guards and shields to accept the soothing feel of
someone's arms around her, to allow herself to accept the warmth of
comfort from anyone, she would feel safest accepting it from him. He in
turn knew and felt the same of her. Bedmates and lovers, you never
risked showing your emotional belly to. Only a friend was someone you
might be at ease enough to think about relaxing around. But even then,
lessons learned in life are hardest to forget.
So here they sat, in full armor, wishing they
could throw off the weight of it and enjoy their last moments before
their long separation. They each saw the other with an honesty they
didn't or couldn't afford when they saw themselves.
When she looked at him, what she saw was a
young man who was blessed with intelligence, kindness and a giving
heart; he was affectionate and protective, loving and gentle. There was
something about him that left her feeling warm and comfortable and at
peace even on the most chaotic of days. Yet when she thought of herself,
or thought of how she must appear to others, she was never quite as kind
to herself. If he could have seen what she saw of herself, he would have
been surprised to find himself sitting across from a stooped hag, long
hair more dull gray than auburn. Her hands, face and body, scared. The
woman he sat across form, in her own mind and through her own eyes was
little more than a bad fantasy novels idea of a crone witch.
What he actually saw as he looked across the
table, was a pair of intelligent, warm brown eyes that to him at least,
revealed far more than they hid. He saw her as generous and giving,
independent and dependable. She asked for nothing, preferring to owe no
one for her existence. She would give everything she possessed to shield
and protect a loved one. She was a woman who's thoughts and opinions he
sought out as a counterpoint to his own. She had a great deal of value
to him, and for a man who dared not value anything or anyone over much,
this said volumes. Her opinion of him was never altered or adjusted by
any of the material things that so many others judged by. That's why
their friendship sometimes surprised him. If material things didn't
impress her, then why did she spend time with him and share her
friendship with him?
As he saw himself, he was little more than
money and material things. If she could see the self-image of the young
man who sat across form her, she would be quite surprised to find not a
human at all, but an android. He felt that, at least for this moment in
time, his heart had been removed and he functioned without emotion. He
felt that his only value to people was in what they could take from him.
His money, his contacts, his talents and his gifts. He felt little more
than a machine, a tool to be used; yet she never did.
So, in the last moments before a long
separation, they stood and embraced. They would each miss the other more
than either would admit to anyone but themselves. They parted. Tears
collected in her eyes that would never fall. Selfish tears at the loss
of the time they might spend together mixed with tears of concern
because she wouldn't be near enough to needlessly watch out for him. He
was heart sore because he hadn't been able to coax a smile from her. It
was an image of her smile that he wanted to take with him. One last time
they embraced before finally parting to endure the loneliness greater
than either could admit to and still feel safe.
